Beastgirl and Other Origin Myths

Beastgirl by Elizabeth Acevedo is a book of poetry focus on civil rights abuses that affected Domicans throughout history.  The poems cover both high and profile events.  For example, the relative of the Florida teen Jordan Davis and a Haitian man in a Dominican park.  The poems cover heavy topics such as abuse, rape, harrassment, and discrimination.  The book is suggested for ten and up, but I feel that it would be more appropriate for high school age students.
